I think the story was disappointing and a worse version of The talented Mr Ripley but I still enjoyed it because of the humor, the dialogue and the characters. They nailed that British upper class way of speaking and acting. My biggest dislike was the ending showing Oliver planning it all out. I think it would be more interesting if he became corrupt and worse as he spent time with them rather than him being a psychopath. Feels kinda like a cliche and an insult to the viewers intellegence to do a reveal like that. Amazing soundtrack and cinematography though! Loved the aspect ratio and the old vibes, as a European the setting and the music gave me such nostalgia.
@@italian_mixx i just picture all us viewers sitting in the dark with an evil smirk just waiting for the bathtub scene. "almost there.. 😈" We're traumatizing these gentlemen lmao
@@Quzgaand on top of that the reveal just made me dislike him a LOT ; especially since the rich family were more interesting as characters in my opinion
I honestly think that one of the few things this movie does well is, in the beginning it really sets up for the story to go ANYWHERE. like, is it gonna be a sad love story? Or Unrequited love? The family are crazy killers? A story about self-centred rich people?.Anything could have happened and i do appreciate that. Also, great acting but love it or hate it, it's definitely interesting to react to.
which is why the ending lacked in my opinion. The first half is good and intriguing that when it came to the point in the middle where you can predict it. And the whole movie is done for shock factor like whats the point?
I like the first half of the movie and I’m happy I went into it blind so where it was going kept me guessing but the last half fell flat for me and just felt unsatisfying. Also I really liked Felix and the way he died really bothers me 😭 he was just so nice
It’s wild to me that they show Ollie from the mouth down with blood on his mouth in the tub and Venetia dies she’s shown from the mouth up in the tub with blood
There are several foreshadowing moments. Like when they talk about seeing your doppelganger means you're about to die and you see outside the window a Felix double, or Oliver playing with the puppet theater clowns, that are four just like the family and that's where he places the stones at the end etc.
Right!! 😢 That was so sad. Personally I was way more horrified by the cold and heartless behaviour of the rich people towards their own family & "friends" than I was by anything Oliver did. They were so cruel. No one took Pamela seriously. Like the way Elspeth talked about her own daughters ED was just heartbreaking and revolting to me, but no one seems to acknowledge that in any reaction I've watched of this movie.
Omg I never even thought twice about it before, just assumed she didn't actually have anywhere to go and took the only way out she saw but your theory makes so much sense 💀 crazy
@@Qu33nMary444 I did see one break done that pointed out that the wealthy family were so disconnected from reality that they feed off other people’s “stories”. They only wanted Ollie around when he was interesting to them.
@@kathleenclark815 Yeah maybe I could see that, but I always thought it was just funny cause it was absurd, like she'd die for attention, not do it to herself lol.
The thing about this movie that I love is even after the "Bad Guy monologue" explaining the entire scheme, I didn't believe him. He is a liar and a manipulator, and I feel like at multiple point's he is even lying to himself. About how he felt and what he wanted. If this was a well thought out scheme, and was planned, why include a sudden 16 year hiatus in the middle of the plan? Unless he truly didn't expect the dad to Push him away. He had hoped he had crawled under his skin enough, but even after insisting, he noticed the father was not going to accept him. He needed more time. But Felix found out he was lying, so he needed to kill him. Then after, when he tried to go rekindle the relationship with the sister, she calls him out, so that bridge is also burned, and she needed to go. He wasn't some mastermind, he fucked up multiple times.
I subscribed over a year ago and I am impressed by how hard this group of guys work. The amount of content they upload and all the filming and editing work behind it (Plus the Patreon and everything extra). It really amazes me. Thank you very much for the quantity and quality of videos.
This movie is an interesting case study of art. I've seen a ton of people see it, and people seem to either love it and how its executed, or they think its a terrible shock value movie. I respect both opinions, but i actually loved this movie. I didn't see the end as an intended twist but a slow build of revealing more and more how twisted the character really is. To me, it was less of a shocking twist but more building tension to see how far the movie will go by the end. The script, the cinematography, and the acting were all great. Like i said, there seems to be a huge divide about this movie, and there are people who really loved it, and that's why people want to see the reactions to this movie. To each their own, and i loved seeing your guys' reaction, can't wait for the next one!
I actually agree 100% . I personally think the film‘s great. Is it something I would rewatch on a regular basis or throw in on a movie sunday with my parents? Unlikely (however a messed up part in me wants to just so I can disturb them and watch them self combust from the second hand embarrassment😂😂) but I still think that the cinematography, the symbolism and acting from every single one were peak level enjoyment
I initially didn’t really care for it but after watching a couple reactions to it, I’ve come to see everything you’ve pointed out. That’s made me appreciate it a whole lot more. It’s very well shot( there’s so many amazing shots) and acted. Ollie was always hiding in plain sight when you go back and watch.
💯 Also, there are some excellent movies that I would never recommend to these guys because the creators really weren’t aiming at that type of audience to begin with. Take any John Waters movie for example. I don’t think they would like, or even understand, those movies. Campy gay movies just won’t fly with this crowd.
I’m surprised how much people take why Ollie says at face value. He’s a liar. I don’t believe he planned and waited for 16 years. He’s an opportunist. He probably saw the obit and jumped back in. He wants the audience to think he’s clever and planned it all but he’s telling us he did that stuff. I think he did love Felix and he would have happily stayed as part of the family if given the chance.
This. There's plenty of clues Ollie was perfectly comfortable on his probable millions he was paid off with, but when he saw the obit he saw an opening and took the opportunity to stalk Elspeth and force a run in. Additionally, I think there is a misunderstanding about his motivation here. It is not that he wants the wealth or Saltburn itself - it's that he wants to *take* it from these people he hates. The taking is the motivation for him.
@@BrilliantDemise It's also a statement about the only way to get to this level of wealth requires terrible actions on your part. You have to have the opportunity and also be willing to do terrible things. Ollie is definitely lying to the audience/Elspeth. He's always lying.
just a quick correction; compulsive lying wouldn’t be what oliver does, bc that’s lying for the sake of lying with little reasoning behind it outside of the thrill of not being honest or sheer habit. what ollie did was lie to manipulate felix, which wouldn’t be being a compulsive liar.
@@PeverellTheThird i think calling him a pathological liar kinda minimizes the harm he does. all the lies were toward a common goal, to be perceived positively by felix and gain his trust by being ‘vulnerable’. he showed no sign of lying because of an irresistible urge to lie.
This was filmed in my hometown here in the U.K. There's loads of giant old mansions/estates like that scattered around the countryside here, I used to visit them every now and then for work. They're completely overwhelming at times, and some are designed so bizarrely that they're like actual mazes inside.
@@maine0389 How about the sister who supposedly cut her own wrists or the mom and whatever he did to her. Any rookie cop would immediately see this creep as an obvious suspect
Oak is 100% right. I vote for movies I sometimes know are outrageous for the reaction. USUALLY I vote for things I love, but every now and then you need something to spice it up.
i think it's really interesting how people either absolutely love this movie or absolutely hate it, and from what i've seen it mostly boils down to their perception of what the movie really was or what it was trying to achieve. Most people who hate it seem to be of the opinion it's cheap shock value that is trying to push the twist ending of "he planned to get the estate all along" while attempting to be "artsy" over actual substance, whereas I know plenty of people who are in love with this movie and will rewatch it over and over just to pick up on the huge amounts foreshadowing and symbolism that you rarely catch on the first watch, and generally see it more as a character study and a story of how obsession can be all consuming, and that Oliver's obsession with Felix led him to seeing the estate (and the rest of oliver' family) as an extension of Felix, and that since he couldn't have felix, he would have Saltburn. Example: the grave scene - very easy to see this as a cheap shock value gross-out scene, but also very interesting to think of it as a very raw depiction of just how far someone could go with obsession and desire
The Oak keeps surprising me on how he reacts to stuff. Him turning into Potterhead arc is by far the best, but the " let's not be judgemental" came as a surprise as well.
I agree with the video title, what the flid did i just watch?! I have no words lol....soooo I'll just explain about Oxfam is a charity shop in UK, similar to Thrift Shops in US, I did laugh at Answer's jump scare & Quinn's comment to Oak, "Stay out of my bathroom" 😂
Extremely wealthy people in the UK are bound by manners and politeness, especially old money. And so when their son dies, they try to ignore it and continue conversation like normal because it would be 'impolite' to grieve when they have guests.
I think, while the initial response of disgust by a lot of people is valid, the beauty of the discomfort gets lost. The film seems to be a huge commentary on class inequality as well as the taboo topic of kink and sex as a transactional/manipulation tactic and psychology as a whole, while also alluding to classic themes like greek mythology's Theseus and the Minotaur. The party scene with ollie wearing the horns shows that in a way, ollie is the minotaur that the people surrounding him become "lost" with, but also the comments throughout the film of "people get lost in saltburn" correlates as well as the statue in the middle of the maze modeled after the classic beast. theres also an abundance of details that add to the overall aesthetic of it, like the scene at the dinner table where venetia is explaining the tale of a doppleganger being seen before someone dies, and felix walks right by the window, foreshadowing his future. all of this aside, the overall composition, acting, setting, and editing makes this film feel like a classic- its not really like any other film seen before, and I think it has opened the door for us to go from the pattern of silly, high budget yet low quality films back to true, classic cinema. theres a lot of directing choices that aren't very popular, making this film even more of a classic. fun facts; the director (emerald fennel) played midge in the barbie movie, oliver (barry keoghan) was in the marvel movie eternals and also improvised the grave scene, and farleigh's hair was inspired by corbin bleu in high school musical :D! also, there was actually a scene where felix and oliver kiss but it was cut :c
Thank you for putting this in the comments. I didn't really have a way of describing what I love about this movie and you nailed it. It's not one of the greatest of all time but it's still a solid flick imo
I have a hard time believing this movie is ever going to be regarded as a “classic” lmao. I also found it to be quite a derivative & lazy version of The Talented Mr. Ripley. But to each their own.
Thank you, yes! It's wonderful, in my opinion, to see more nuanced, dark, and uncomfortable movies making a comeback and putting people out of their comfort zone again! We've been playing it safe and without too many stakes for too long, so movies like this are incredibly welcome. ☺️
Love this film. It’s interesting to hear why other people hate it. I just grew up watching avant- garde films and learned to appreciate them. I march to a different drummer. My rating 10/10. ☮️
If you grew up watching avant-garde films, then you should know this movie is doing nothing new and is just lifting things from various other movies. Their criticisms weren’t that the film was too artsy. It was that they’ve seen this story before and seen it done better many places.
It’s not a story about taking over wealth. There was no long game. He became obsessed with Felix- not necessarily romantically, but obsessed- and he rode the wave. As he got to know the situation, he exploited it. He loved the glamour but hated how easily life came to these people. It’s a small portrait into what happens when a sick person encounters an exploitable environment. It’s happening every day. Someone somewhere is turning people against each other, lying left and right, and manipulating the room just to watch it burn. THAT is Ollie. The wealth is just the background. No, he didn’t wait 16 years to get the estate. He was somewhere wreaking havoc on others, surely. But the window re-opened, Oliver is nuts, so he went back to his old playground. Gaining the estate was a bonus. He didn’t want it, he wanted to see them lose it. There’s a difference. It’s not a “big picture” movie, it’s a vignette into obsession and lunacy. Don’t ask too much of it and you’ll enjoy it. Also, yeah if you don’t think the dialogue was hilariously dry, that’s half the film’s value. It’s a dark comedy that doesn’t work for everyone.
PoundTown had me DYING! Yes, it's Poundland although we do have a PoundWorld too 😂 Also, yes we Brits are infamous for our no emotion, "stiff upper lip", "keep calm and carry on" attitudes. Particularly, the upper class.
Watched Saltburn in a small, packed theater. It was a real bonding experience for everyone. I've never heard so many audible F-bombs dropped from an audience before, as well as groans and "oh no's" when people realized what they were about to witness 😂 I thought the cinematography was beautiful and the acting was great, but I thought the story itself was very uneven and couldn't really ever figure out what it wanted to be or what the overlying message was going to be. It felt like there were a lot of different ideas, but none of them were fully realized. It's been fun seeing others reactions to it though! If you're still taking suggestions, I'd like to nominate 'Bottoms' (also from last year). It's a comedy about a pair of "gay, ugly, and untalented" seniors who start a fight club to impress their cheerleader crushes. Marshawn Lynch is their teacher. I also saw it in theaters with a wide range of demographics in the audience, and we all had a great time!
any story about gay obsession is gonna appeal to me tbh lmao but this is one of my fave recent movies in a while! it was beautifully done and I think it can exist as a good character study on oliver quick. the biggest misconception I see is that this is an ‘eat the rich’ story (no pun intended), but considering that’s based in OLIVER’S perspective of what happened, I don’t think it’s accurate at all. he’s an unreliable narrator, esp when he’s monologuing like a fuckin supervillain
It’s so irritating when people call this an “eat the rich” movie lol. Tbh I only watched it because I thought there was going to be a queer love story based on the trailer and while I thought the film was visually stunning, I wasn’t overly impressed by the plot or the pacing. It was fine for a one time watch, tho.
To explain it about obsessive behavior. Oliver is not a reliable narrator so him telling this story is questionable. His main objective was Felix when he couldn’t have him it went to the status Felix had. I understand it’s not a movie for a lot of ppl and I’m glad you watched it and I really enjoyed you guy’s reaction ❤
That’s for reacting guys, love your videos 😊 Just want to add a few things - Primarily that it’s a movie about obsession, not wealth. I will probably explain this poorly, but there’s a lot of notes about class in the plot that I think get missed by folks who aren’t aware of the layers of the uk class system. (Not that the movie itself is a class commentary, but there are elements that make things make more sense in my opinion) Oliver will never be able to obtain their status, even after inheriting the estate he won’t be seen as an equal by his peers - bare in mind that most of them descend from royalty. It’s impossible to work hard and earn that life, you have to be born into it. Inheriting it is the closest he can possibly get. Fairleigh and Pamela are examples of that, no money but still have the status from their bloodline. The scenes with the bath and the period blood for example are kind of a metaphor of him trying to consume their bloodline. The end of the grave scene was improv by Barry, showing the lengths of Oliver’s obsession. Those scenes are really not just there for shock value (I didn’t actually find it that shocking at all 😅) The ‘pet’ comments I don’t think were intended as a romantic/sexual comment, it was about Felix adopting people who are struggling because it makes him more interesting. (See the scene where Oliver first tells Felix about his family and Felix leans in and tells Oliver to tell him how bad it was) They’re bored, have no adversity, and see Oliver as entertainment/someone to adore them. I’ve encountered so many wealthy people cosplaying poor to seem interesting, particularly at university - It’s extremely common. Elspeth references this song by the lake, which is about exactly that. ruclips.net/video/lkpLbEM06qE/видео.htmlsi=TPSwojDOPn7gQ66R When they have the first dinner at uni and the other guy says everyone else already knows each other - that’s because most of them would have went to private school together, or are connecting over their families. Although Oliver is actually reasonably well off, he doesn’t have those connections.
One of my podcasts spoke about class/wealth in the UK and it's different from the US. In the US you can become a millionaire and earn your "way into" the rich circles. But they said in the UK if you aren't born into it then it's "new money" and it's not the same, which is what all those comments are about Ollie being on scholarship, they look down on it. I think Felix viewed Ollie like a pet project and once Ollie "didn't fit" into Felix's ideal anymore, he wanted Ollie out. YES Ollie lied about his father bc he was desperate to get back into Felix's' aura and that was only bc Felix was annoyed with him, it wasn't even about anything major. I never really thought Felix was a good friend bc it was never about Oliver, it was still all about what Oliver could do for Felix or how he made Felix feel. And Felix speaking to Olivers mom and "surprising" him with a trip there wasn't being a good friend imo. (Granted it's all a lie but we don't know this at the time) but Oliver told him how horrible his life was and that he didn't want to go there and Felix just makes the decision for him, to force him to deal with it before he's ready? What if it had all been true? How traumatizing for Oliver it could've been and Felix thinks he could just fix all of it? Neither of them were a good friend to anyone. And none of the family would've have actually liked Oliver if he'd been himself. He knew that so he figured out what each of them wanted and gave it to them. This movie has so many layers it's crazy.
@@kimberlyjeanne9456 Yeah, that’s all well worded. 😊 It’s mostly about who you are, not what you have. I’m from the UK and grew up in Cambridge, so similar university types - The class system is dumb.
@@Qu33nMary444We have a bunch of different thrift stores; the Salvation Army and Goodwill are probably the most known. Some are just little local resale shops
People tend to focus on the shock factor of this film, they don't always see that each of those shocking scenes had a purpose. It was a slow reveal of Oliver's true character. The bathtub scene we saw his obsession with Felix. Weird, but relatively harmless. Then the scene with Venetia, him lying about it and his conversation with Elsbeth... we start to see him stirring the pot and being a manipulator. That's when we start to wonder what his game is, until he frames Farleigh and we realize it's more than just causing drama. By the time we get to the grave scene, we've come to realize he's full-on psychotic. Something's wrong upstairs. Oliver was smart, but he was also a sociopath which is a dangerous combination. Lying came easily but emotions did not. That's why he was self-estranged from his loving family and it's why he couldn't handle his intense feelings for Felix. Once he was rejected after Felix caught onto his game... it was no longer about being with him, but rather becoming him and having his life for himself.
Oh dang. I actually enjoyed it. I think the big question was, was Oliver in love with Fellix? His dialogue says no but a lot of his actions contradict this. I think he started off crushing on him and obsessed with him. He wanted to get in his friend group, lied again when Fellix pulled away. I think throughout the film he kept wanting more from Fellix and felt rejected when he couldn’t get him romantically and then became obsessed with becoming him and living his life. His love kept becoming a dark obsession. To me I got a lot of YOU/Talented Mr. Ripley/Cruel Intentions vibes and dug it. Also the second hand embarrassment of when Fellix finds out Oliver is a complete lie, hit me like a truck.
It’s not a good movie. It’s got good acting and the shots are great. But there is not a strong story or plot. The motivation is random and the movie is only popular for shock value.
I think it's pretty bad. It unecessarily perversed and the story is pretty basic. And the hook for this movie is "Oh it's crazy" it is but not like it earned it. It's a movie that's just edge lording. It's crazy just for the sake of it being crazy. It's like a lazier The talented Mr. Ripley.
@@ohgryphok you gotta relax🤣you took that comment way too seriously. You can have an opinion ofc just like he can have one about you not seeing any movie before 21st century🤣I don’t blame him especially if you think this movie is a masterpiece 😭
The film's best subplot leads nowhere. There is a fantasy-horror subplot. - Butler says: "People get lost at Saltburn" - Venitia says: "A full moon, do you know what that means? We all lose our minds" (werewolves?) - Oliver says: "Do you know... I'm a vampire" (vampire) - Venitia during breakfast tells the story of a Doppelganger walking outside the window. || And we see Felix's Doppelganger outside the window (Doppelganger) - There's also a Minotaur at the center of the labyrinth, which ties back to what the Butler said.
This movie is insane and i loved it !! The actual framing of the shots, the direction make the movie. I think this could have been done absolutely horribly but emerald fennell directing as well as writing made it come to life. Those scenes i think were meant to be disgusting and alarming and they were done well. I think if you go into it blind its incredibly shocking 😂 was super anticipating your reactions to this, so thank you for being willing to step outside your comfort zones !! ❤ keep those crazy reactions coming !! 🎉
Saltburn is like when you make a movie about shock value for the sake of shock value. There’s no real movtivation or plot its all over the place. I don’t like its plot because its so predictable but the acting and cinematography is shot phenomenally.
@supersucks broad agree !! I think that the movie representing obsession with wealth and the fetishization of others was well done but in terms of a movie it was definitely more of a thematic statement than a plot driven movie, which I can still respect!! I also loveee emerald fennells vision for the direction so I'm biased 🤣
Ok, so Oliver is an unreliable narrator. He didn’t originally plan to take over and do what he did. His plan was to get close to Felix. He did love Felix and it wasn’t until he was completely rejected by Felix that he decided if he can’t be with Felix he’ll take everything he has. He takes Saltburn burn because it’s his only way of being with Felix forever. I believe the director pretty much validated this.
Damnnn, did nobody else see the brilliance of this movie?? They're all talking about how there were no clues that Oliver was going to do what he was going to do, but there were so many?! And the foreshadowing for how each character would die, all of the references to other classic films and literature, so much symbolism in each shot, in each line, in each look.... I don't know, I guess some people just don't "get" it, but this movie was a masterpiece, and it's really sad to see people only taking away from it that it was "shock value and had zero plot." Each character is so complex too. Kind of shocked none of them took anything away from this one.
This movie is only a masterpiece if you've never seen anything other than a hallmark film before, it's certainly derivative and worse than all of it's references. It's definitely not all shock value, but the plot is contrived and the characters are emptier versions of all of Emerald Fennell's inspirations. All the actors did the best they could with the script but Jacob Elordi is no Dickie Greenleaf and Barry Keoghan makes for an incredibly untalented Mrs Ripley. Loved Rosamund Pike in this, and both Alison Oliver and Archie Madekwe were so good in it made me want to check out their other works. Very beautiful looking film though, should've been a music video.

I love that people are still watching this I love this movie. Barry made decisions he said HAD TO BE MADE im not mad at him 😂 but no really they did some amazing work here and I support the crew and the decisions they made it was controversial and thought provoking and people weren’t sure why. It’s about consumption. They were all devouring. This time the middle class man was the one on top. there’s a lot to say about obsession and us being masochists. Needing to see suffering and being drawn to it, being an observer in order to really feel it. Meanwhile a bit of our own suffering is made up and self inflicted. That’s all notes about society. Good ass movie.
Im really glad you guys don’t fake your reactions like some reaction channels I’ve seen. Although I personally did enjoy the movie, I appreciated hearing your view on it.
I personally LOVE this movie and the writer/director Emerald Fennell. Her directorial debut “Promising Young Woman” is much more palatable for a wider audience which I also loved. The acting in this one is top notch, everyone knocked it out of the park. I love the atmosphere Emerald brought with the intricate set design, she had such a clear and specific vision and I thought she nailed it. Finally I think the cinematography was fantastic, so many incredibly dynamic shots. I get it’s not for everyone but I’ve grown to love it more and more since my first viewing! So fun to have such a twisted female filmmaker!
Oh my - I haven't seen this movie, but if it's directed by the same person that did Promising Young Woman then I'll pass. I couldn't wait to see that movie - thought it was going to be riveting and clever only to have it fizzle out so stupidly at the end, imo. Ugh - that movie was as frustrating as Funny Games, to me, but not as good. She did all that huffin and puffin and wasn't the big bad wolf she thought she was in the end. Made me angry. Ugh. This movie piques my interest, but I dunno.... Hollywood has been missing a lot these last few years. I cant stand movies just for the sake of making a buck. Most of these movies don't mean anything anymore - just pushing an unwanted narrative or shocking and violent for no reason.

This actually reminded me of The Talented Mr. Ripley with Matt Damon and Jude Law. I enjoyed Saltburn and I also enjoyed the message(s) behind it as it relates to caste/class/wealth, race, sexuality. The Catton's are/were getting gratification from observing poor people (I've seen this in real life). Felix, who seemingly plays the role of the guardian angel, actually crushes people. People feel the warmth from his sun and the bitter cold when he dumps them. I love what they did with Venetia, what she symbolized (blood and wine in excess). Mrs. Catton tells Oliver that he's perceptive, which highlights the fact that she is far from it. The Cattons' habit of inviting Felix's poor friends home for school breaks and "saving" them finally backfired. The film's cinematography is amazing. Felix/Barry wanted to be friends with Felix until Felix cut him off. When he broke the mirror he decided to destroy the family and get the house. There's a lot of subtlety that gets lost with the more shocking scenes. Heh.
I just want to add a critique of this movie. It is absolutely stunning. The score, the videography, even the discomfort is gorgeous in its own strange way. My first watch, I was like okaayyyyy this is a bit gratuitous. But now, after watching it a couple more times, I feel like it wouldn't be the same vibe without some of those very talked about scenes.
How the heck were you able to watch this more than once? My stomach twists in knots every time I even see the title of the movie. I don't even think I can watch this reaction video. I figured I'd just scan the comments to get the gist of how they reacted.
@AdamWex Because I like to understand the art of cinema. Like I said, this is a super beautiful movie. The use of color, shadows and light, the themes throughout, all were really cool after I got over my initial slight shock. Many movies are hard to digest on the first watch.
@AriaIsara AGREED! I just wasn't prepared until after the tub scene for what I was in for, and had to readjust my mindset. Not exactly "shocking", just unexpected
@@KatBee00ok come one. Do you reallly think this movie is “super beautiful”? It’s a creep film. Basic bland shots and basic color shadows and lights. Nothing of this movie is ground breaking

Thwack, cut to black, sound of body hitting the deck, then Murder on the Dance Floor hits! Duncan was there all along... He could have been playing an even longer game than Oliver!
I love watching people react to this movie. Oak laughing at him drinking the bath water was so funny while everyone else is freaking out, because what else can you do but laugh at the absurdity of the movie 😂
@@KrazyKat007 Where did I say or even imply that this movie was breaking new ground? I just enjoyed it for what it was: a campy fun piece of art. What I found very interesting about Saltburn is that it's a movie with very little gore, nudity or explicit sex scenes and yet it's so disturbing, even more so than movies that are much heavier with these elements. It's a psychological movie. It's not even about the twists and turns, the plot is pretty obvious, but trying to understand the mindset of the characters, and why they do what they do, that's what's fascinating to me. If I'm to be honest I only wanted to watch this movie because of Ewan Mitchell 😅 but in the end I liked it a lot more than I thought I will (even though there were certain scenes I wish I could unsee)
Great reaction fellas! Saltburn was one of my favorite movies of 2023. I love seeing people’s reactions. You either love it or hate it. Either way it sticks in your mind I guess lol.
the plot is incredibly nuanced around the narrative on class divide & the quirks of the ultra, ultra rich dealing with anything other than day to day existing as you please & making sure the shape of the hydrangeas are acceptable.
This movie was definitely an emotional rollercoaster. Several scenes had my jaw completely on the floor. The twist was definitely interesting to say the least
Cast and Crew did a great job. Unfortunately, the story just didn't connect with us. What was your reaction? Did this meet your expectations? What did we miss?

Great acting can only go so far with a story like this.

It did in the beginning for sure. Could've gone anywhere.
I agree, amazing acting and beautifully shot.
which is why the ending lacked in my opinion. The first half is good and intriguing that when it came to the point in the middle where you can predict it. And the whole movie is done for shock factor like whats the point?
I agree the start was interesting but it all goes to shit when it turns into some weird sexual deviant fantasy for no reason
I like the first half of the movie and I’m happy I went into it blind so where it was going kept me guessing but the last half fell flat for me and just felt unsatisfying. Also I really liked Felix and the way he died really bothers me 😭 he was just so nice
the "Lets not be judgmental here" reminded me me a lot of the "maybe it's just their traditions" from the midsommar reaction lmaoo 😭😭😭
It’s wild to me that they show Ollie from the mouth down with blood on his mouth in the tub and Venetia dies she’s shown from the mouth up in the tub with blood
Wow. Brilliant catch!!
There are several foreshadowing moments. Like when they talk about seeing your doppelganger means you're about to die and you see outside the window a Felix double, or Oliver playing with the puppet theater clowns, that are four just like the family and that's where he places the stones at the end etc.
This movie is shot so well. The director did such a good job.

I thought on that myself "flip the prey and yeah, that's the film". Eat the rich if it were a person basically.
When you realize Pamela was probably murdered by the guy she was hiding from. 😢
She committed suicide. That's why the mom said "she'd do anything for attention"
I can already tell what scene y'all are reacting to in the thumbnail. 💜
Yep. Yep. Yep.
There’s at least 4 scenes I can think of that would be what they’re reacting to

The script was average, but the acting and cinematography were phenomenal imo.
💯 Also, there are some excellent movies that I would never recommend to these guys because the creators really weren’t aiming at that type of audience to begin with.
Take any John Waters movie for example. I don’t think they would like, or even understand, those movies.
Campy gay movies just won’t fly with this crowd.
I love it and how it’s executed, AND I think it’s also very shock value-based. Nothing really wrong with it.
Can be both
@@PeverellTheThird i think calling him a pathological liar kinda minimizes the harm he does. all the lies were toward a common goal, to be perceived positively by felix and gain his trust by being ‘vulnerable’. he showed no sign of lying because of an irresistible urge to lie.
Master manipulator.
i dont think you understood tht Oliver is psychopath with that goes compulsive lying. They can't help it
I have known compulsive liars. It’s both, though they don’t have a years long, long term goal. More short term goal of days or months.

i think it's really interesting how people either absolutely love this movie or absolutely hate it, and from what i've seen it mostly boils down to their perception of what the movie really was or what it was trying to achieve.
19:38 obsessed with Oak here, he’s being very real with that bath water comment perspective 😂😂😂

I agree with the video title, what the flid did i just watch?! I have no words lol....soooo I'll just explain about Oxfam is a charity shop in UK, similar to Thrift Shops in US,
I did laugh at Answer's jump scare & Quinn's comment to Oak, "Stay out of my bathroom" 😂
Great comment! Couldn't agree more.

And I thought Oak would give the lowest score😂
Love this film. It’s interesting to hear why other people hate it. I just grew up watching avant- garde films and learned to appreciate them. I march to a different drummer. My rating 10/10. ☮️
If you grew up watching avant-garde films, then you should know this movie is doing nothing new and is just lifting things from various other movies.
Their criticisms weren’t that the film was too artsy.
It was that they’ve seen this story before and seen it done better many places.
I saw this in my notifications and gasped loudly. I can't believe y'all reacted to this. I'm loving the variety of your reactions!!!
Yes, it's Poundland although we do have a PoundWorld too 😂
Also, yes we Brits are infamous for our no emotion, "stiff upper lip", "keep calm and carry on" attitudes. Particularly, the upper class.
I cannot believe you guys are reacting to thjs!! I screamed when I saw the thumbnail! I am cracking up already knowing what's coming
Watched Saltburn in a small, packed theater. It was a real bonding experience for everyone. I've never heard so many audible F-bombs dropped from an audience before, as well as groans and "oh no's" when people realized what they were about to witness 😂
I thought the cinematography was beautiful and the acting was great, but I thought the story itself was very uneven and couldn't really ever figure out what it wanted to be or what the overlying message was going to be.
Barry Keoghan is a phenomenal actor, he deserves the recognition
Oh nooooooo. Good luck badd medicine boys!
any story about gay obsession is gonna appeal to me tbh lmao but this is one of my fave recent movies in a while! it was beautifully done and I think it can exist as a good character study on oliver quick. the biggest misconception I see is that this is an ‘eat the rich’ story (no pun intended), but considering that’s based in OLIVER’S perspective of what happened, I don’t think it’s accurate at all.
he’s an unreliable narrator, esp when he’s monologuing like a fuckin supervillain
“Eat the rich” is not a pun 💀
Oliver did not literally eat the rich, he did exactly what that phrase entails, destroying rich people.
I’m obsessed with this movie. The cinematography, the acting, the themes omg it’s a wild trippy ride and I loved it ❤
To explain it about obsessive behavior. Oliver is not a reliable narrator so him telling this story is questionable. His main objective was Felix when he couldn’t have him it went to the status Felix had. I understand it’s not a movie for a lot of ppl and I’m glad you watched it and I really enjoyed you guy’s reaction ❤
That’s for reacting guys, love your videos 😊
Just want to add a few things - Primarily that it’s a movie about obsession, not wealth.
I will probably explain this poorly, but there’s a lot of notes about class in the plot that I think get missed by folks who aren’t aware of the layers of the uk class system.
(Not that the movie itself is a class commentary, but there are elements that make things make more sense in my opinion)
Oliver will never be able to obtain their status, even after inheriting the estate he won’t be seen as an equal by his peers - bare in mind that most of them descend from royalty.
Those scenes are really not just there for shock value (I didn’t actually find it that shocking at all 😅)
The ‘pet’ comments I don’t think were intended as a romantic/sexual comment, it was about Felix adopting people who are struggling because it makes him more interesting.
(See the scene where Oliver first tells Felix about his family and Felix leans in and tells Oliver to tell him how bad it was)
They’re bored, have no adversity, and see Oliver as entertainment/someone to adore them.
I’ve encountered so many wealthy people cosplaying poor to seem interesting, particularly at university - It’s extremely common.
Elspeth references this song by the lake, which is about exactly that.
ruclips.net/video/lkpLbEM06qE/видео.htmlsi=TPSwojDOPn7gQ66R
When they have the first dinner at uni and the other guy says everyone else already knows each other - that’s because most of them would have went to private school together, or are connecting over their families. Although Oliver is actually reasonably well off, he doesn’t have those connections.
That's interesting. Thank you for explaining all that.
It’s mostly about who you are, not what you have.
I’m from the UK and grew up in Cambridge, so similar university types - The class system is dumb.

Oh no, my condolences.
😂😂
For me this movie was an absolute masterpiece, but i 100% don't blame anyone who couldn't stand it
It’s not a good movie.
Ripley.

The film's best subplot leads nowhere. There is a fantasy-horror subplot.

- Venitia says: "A full moon, do you know what that means? We all lose our minds" (werewolves?)
- Oliver says: "Do you know... I'm a vampire" (vampire)
- Venitia during breakfast tells the story of a Doppelganger walking outside the window. || And we see Felix's Doppelganger outside the window (Doppelganger)
- There's also a Minotaur at the center of the labyrinth, which ties back to what the Butler said.
And not to forget Venitia said to Oliver „I like you better than last year‘s“ 🌝

You are correct in everything you say......... except the last line..... I expected their disapproval from the first word they spoke
As long as you enjoyed it, that's all that counts. 🤜🤛
@@BaddMedicine Well your insight into me is as accurate as your assessment of the movie. A point for consistency.
@@weatethebirds Sorry, you make little sense. This movie is NOT being considered a "Masterpiece" from the Marvel crowd. If you watched the video you are commenting in. You could see that played out.
I've never seen Mason Quinn so fired up haha.
Omgggg, I wasn’t expecting this today… never clicked so fast
Oak is right, there are just some movies that people recommend to see y'alls reactions to the f'd up stuff. I try to only recommend movies and shows that i genuinely think are great and think y'all would really enjoy, but I'd be lying if I said I don't have fun to seeing you guys recoil to crap like this whenever I get the notification for it. 💜
lots of people genuinely enjoy this movie for all of it, acknowledging the far out moments. i was interested to see how they would understand the story & it turns out they didnt sadly.
@@dundonozsame, a lot of people, rightfully so, tend to only pay attention to the gross scenes so they actually misinterpret the movie, see it a lot in these comments lol
I laughed so hard when I saw that y'all reacted to this 😂
A pretty good movie if i do say so
Its not for everyone i guess.
I suppose you also wouldnt like "poor things" it just came out and im pretty sure it will win alot of oscars and nominations.
Its surrealistic, disturbing funny and weird of course. Thats why you probably wouldnt like/connect with it.
That is on the list.
@@BaddMedicine really? Good, even if it's not ur cup of tea it's very worth watching. One of the best cinema experiences ive ever had (speaking cinematography, sound design, tone, messages of the film wise)
love how during the bath scene everyone else was groaning and the Oak just laughed 😂 love him
Venetia wine pouring over the glass in the dining room. Her red blood water pouring over tub……
Love how Dave gets so passionate about movies! Mason is just 😍 . The Oak is a gen z at heart and Answer just radiates happiness. You should react to Poor Things.
Thank you and that is on the list🤙
most people didn't like this movie, but honestly I did.... I find films like this interesting
Do... do you need your head studied?
Also, have you watched American Psycho? I mean, both stories are about extreme sociopaths.
@@Prof.SeverusSnape yes, I've watched it. and I just find these types of films interesting, because I study psychology.
@@amyprscheck out The talented Mr. Ripley If you haven’t already, you’ll love this film 🍿
@@Prof.SeverusSnapeyou know someone can have a different perspective and opinion than yours right?
@@amyprshonestly same, have you seen The Talented Mr. Ripley ? I recommend if you haven’t seen it
I loved this movie! Loved the twists that the villain wins. Loved how it was shot and the acting.
I got a clue about Ollie's father when the rock didn't go where it was SUPPOSED to go (in the water). 🤔😉
I loved the movie. It’s just a simple beautifully shot movie. A guy wanting everything. It is what it is and the movie knows it’s nothing more.
The oaks catch phrase is becoming “I dont know if this will make the cut.”
Heh.
"People are selling their bathwater online these days!"
Never change, Oak
LMAO Diamond Dave at the end with his score
@@AdamWexcome on! There is nothing truly graphic or shocking. The scenes are just cringey.
@AriaIsara AGREED! I just wasn't prepared until after the tub scene for what I was in for, and had to readjust my mindset. Not exactly "shocking", just unexpected
@@KatBee00ok come one. Do you reallly think this movie is “super beautiful”? It’s a creep film. Basic bland shots and basic color shadows and lights. Nothing of this movie is ground breaking
This movie is actually very good, stylized, creepy, but artistic.
Imagine the ending if at the moment that he touches the stone on top of The Catton's puppet box... Duncan comes into focus behind him and Whacks him in the back of the head with a big shovel! Thwack, cut to black, sound of body hitting the deck, then Murder on the Dance Floor hits! Duncan was there all along... He could have been playing an even longer game than Oliver!
I thought Farleigh would show up in the end lol, he's still out there I assume
Love it!
“more of an admirer..” oak: euuugh. also oak “we dont judgee” 😭😭 green flags
I love watching people react to this movie. Oak laughing at him drinking the bath water was so funny while everyone else is freaking out, because what else can you do but laugh at the absurdity of the movie 😂
I love these guys and I knew they wouldn’t like it 😂. It’s camp and they didn’t pick it up. But I enjoyed their reactions anyway.
This film is derivative crap.
It’s not about flying over anyone’s head.
It’s that this story has been done many times and done much better
@@KrazyKat007look at negative navy over here
@@KrazyKat007 Where did I say or even imply that this movie was breaking new ground? I just enjoyed it for what it was: a campy fun piece of art. That is my opinion, just like you have yours Mr. Derivative Crap. Life is too short to take everything so seriously. It's okay to let people enjoy things.
Glad Oak spotted Aemond Targaryen!
Oh boy, here we go. 😂😂😂😂
I was waiting for you to recognize Ewan Mitchell who plays Aemond Targaryen in HOTD 😂😍
Great reaction fellas! Saltburn was one of my favorite movies of 2023. I love seeing people’s reactions. You either love it or hate it. Either way it sticks in your mind I guess lol.
16:29 soo close Ollie is hunting THEM in some sick game
the plot is incredibly nuanced around the narrative on class divide & the quirks of the ultra, ultra rich dealing with anything other than day to day existing as you please & making sure the shape of the hydrangeas are acceptable.
Oxfam is a charity, they have charity shops here in the UK. So people donate clothes, household goods, books etc, and the shop sells them super cheap.
Love you guys, first time catching a video so early! It was definitely an experience when I first saw it, can't wait to see your reaction!
oak losing it at the bathwater scene 😂😂
Great cast and intense story. Really enjoyed this review!
Promising young woman was also directed by emerald fennel and is a great example of a movie that is hard to watch but absolutely amazing
SALTBURN IS A MASTERPIECE ITS ONE PF TJE BEST MOVIES EVER MADE. JUST LOOK AWAY IN THE BATHROOM SCENE AND EVERY THING WILL WROCK YOUR WORLD❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂😂
Oxfam is the British equivalent of a place like Salvation Army, iirc.
This movie was definitely an emotional rollercoaster. Several scenes had my jaw completely on the floor. The twist was definitely interesting to say the least
